12 killed in Narsingdi trawler capsize

A total of 12 people including six children were killed as a passenger trawler capsized in Arial Kha River at Raipura upazila of Narsingdi today.

Fire Service and Civil Defence divers, with the help of local people, recovered bodies of the victims, our Narsingdi correspondent reports quoting Azharul Islam, officer-in-charge of Raipura Police Station.

Six of the victims were identified as Mohammad Yeasin, 7, Mazedar Nessa, 50, Jerin, 6, Maleka Khatun, 50, her daughter Marzia, 4, son Rakibul, 8, and one Samrat, the OC said.

The trawler with over a hundred passengers on board capsized in the river around 11:30, the OC also said.

"The engine-run-boat sank into the river as a hole developed in its haul on its way to a local shrine," he added.

Soon after the capsize, six divers from the Fire Service and Civil Defence with the help of local people started rescue operation that ended around 6:40pm.
