Tight security measures for Aug 15

In the backdrop of recent militant attacks across the country, law enforcers will beef up security in and around Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi on the occasion of National Mourning Day on August 15.

“Though there has no specific report of threat by the intelligence, the law enforcers will remain vigilant and take all-out security measures to avert any untoward incident considering contemporary situation,” said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah today.

Addressing a press briefing at Russel Square of Dhanmondi 32, the DMP boss also placed a set of directives for ensuring security and traffic management in the area, which will be followed from tomorrow.

Mourners will have to wait around Kalabagan Playground until the VIP and VVIP guests pay their tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi starting from 4:00am on August 15.

Visitors, without any combustible substance and bags, have to enter the museum through a security archway and leave through the opposite way, he said.

According to other instructions, vehicular movement will be restricted from Russel Square and Metro Shopping Mall and no vehicle will be allowed to park between Kalabagan Playground and Sobhanbagh mosque on Mirpur road.

On the fateful night of August 15 in 1975, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated by a group of disgruntled army officers. Bangabandhu's wife Fazilatunnessa Mujib, sons Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal and Sheikh Russell and daughters-in-law Sultana Kamal and Rosy Jamal were also killed in the bloodbath, one of the most heinous in the world's history.

Sixteen more people, all close to Sheikh Mujib, were shot dead.
