Man drowns in Dhaka canal after rescuing 2

A youth drowned after saving the life of two boys who fell into a water body in Badda area of Dhaka this afternoon.

The deceased, Sarwar, 28, was a pickup van driver, Abdul Jalil, officer-in-charge of Badda Police Station, told The Daily Star.

A group of boys were playing football in an open ground near the water body this afternoon. Suddenly, the ball fell into the water and two of the boys drowned while trying to retrieve the ball, the OC said quoting a witness.

Noticing this, Sarwar jumped into the water and rescued the boys. Later, he again jumped into the water to retrieve the ball but failed, he added.

On information, divers from Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed to the spot and recovered Sarwar’s body around 4:50pm, the police officer said.

Later, the body was handed over to his family.
