None helped as Delhi woman stabbed to death in broad daylight

A young woman was stabbed to death in broad daylight on a road in Delhi this morning, with at least six people witnessing but no one trying to intervene the gruesome incident.

CCTV visuals show the attacker stopped his motorbike on a busy road in Burari in north Delhi, attacked 21-year-old Karuna, a teacher, and stabbed her 26 times till she stopped moving, reports NDTV.

The alleged killer, Surender Singh, 34, was later arrested.

The victim’s family had complained to the police about five months ago that she was being harassed and stalked by Singh, a neighbor in the middle of a divorce. However, no action was taken as the police claimed the two families had "reached a compromise".

The CCTV footage reveals Karuna was stabbed repeatedly as she thrashed about helplessly. The witnesses were seen to either glance and keep walking, or watch the grisly act in horror. Only two persons were seen moving towards the woman but backed off.

The attacker was seen to keep stabbing her even after she stopped moving, and then he bashed a stone against her head, before finally giving the lifeless body a hard kick and leaving on his bike, unchallenged and apparently without any concern about being caught, reports NDTV.

"I ran and went to help the girl. I called on 100 twice, the police did not come, then I called the ambulance, no one came," said Manish Kumar, a witness who later took Karuna to a hospital on an auto-rickshaw.

"The man had been harassing my sister for a long time. He stays in Rohini. We had filed a complaint, after which he had calmed down...until now," the victim’s brother said as her family protested outside the hospital.

This is the second incident of a woman being stabbed to death in public in Delhi in 24 hours, with no help.

Earlier on Monday, a 32-year-old married woman was stabbed to death allegedly by her lover, who then committed suicide. The incident took place in Inderpuri area of southwest Delhi. Neighbours allegedly did not react, reports NDTV.
