TRENDY TEENS
Don't worry; you don't have to choose just yet! The teenage years are the prime time to experiment with fashion. So don't hold yourself back! However, diving in blind can be rather dangerous, and here are just a few ways to make your transition easier.
To new beginnings
It's always important to start simple. Young girls often cannot fight off the make-up temptation. While you might see your 23 year old sister effortlessly put on that mac ruby-woo, it would probably be better for you to start much smaller. At thirteen, avoid makeup since the chemicals can ruin the softness and delicacy of your already glowing skin. A light coloured lip gloss and maybe a bit of mascara occasionally can be the perfect way to let your natural look shine.
While your collection of frocks may be getting smaller, the collection of jeans and t-shirts are definitely getting larger. From the baby blue top with your favourite cartoon character, to the chic tribal-printed jeggings or the short pleated skirts, the options are endless. For those with a love for traditional wear, Mayasir has a really good collection of vibrant salwar kameezes designed with sequins and embroidery that are perfect for the younger teens.
For invites and special occasions like weddings, opt for a bit of eye shadow to add a bit more glamour to your look. You can go for the traditional lehenga with intricate designs or the sleek and stylish western gown. Add a bead necklace, or a silver bracelet and you are good to go!
For the in-betweens
After easing into the hectic teen life and your mother finally accepting the fact that her little girl has indeed grown up, your choice in clothes may have become limited to the latest fashion trends. However, fashion should really be about enjoying oneself and one should always keep experimenting. The greatest worldwide trends were not made by those who only wanted to "fit-in".
Whether you would prefer a fotua from Trendz or Dressy Dale or a tunic from Taaga, opt for fall colours such as maroon, grey and turquoise. Match it with a pair of printed harem pants or floral chinos, for a casual sense of elegancy. You could also join in on the worldwide hype of jumpsuits. Chic, stylish and found in both monochromatic colours and prints, these are perfect for invites and engagement parties.
Forgo the heavy makeup materials. Your sensitive skin does not need to be covered in layers of foundation and concealers. What it needs is proper hydration and regular moisturising. Don't stress about the acne breakouts; they will diminish with time. You can always use a coral lipstick or black eyeliner for casual occasions, only using heavier makeup in formal events, such as weddings.
To the almost adults
For the older clan members who have already stepped into their adulthood, fashion comes almost naturally to you. Busy schedules preparing for exams now dominate your life, and with the minimal amount of time left to think about fashion, incorporating comfort and style becomes integral. This fall, plaid scarves are in, and matched with a lacy top from either Yellow or Noir, can really make you look effortlessly impeccable. You could also check out Taaga, with their extensive collection of fusion-wear including tops, fotuas, skirts, and pants in various prints, tie-dye or embroidery. Stores such as Kay Kraft and Bibiana also have a variety of stitched salwar-kameezes to choose from which make for comfortable yet trendy casual wear.
For now, it might not be wise to wear high heels to school and risk getting your ankle sprained right before your finals. Instead, a cute pair of converse or sandals will do here. With the lack of time, it is smarter to go simple on the makeup, only enhancing one of your features, whether it is a bold lipstick or the perfect cat-eye. Always keep a face mist in your handbag to rehydrate your skin instantly. You can add a metal necklace or a pair of studs from Urban Truth to finish off your impeccable fall look.
Save the heavy makeups for invites and weddings. This is where you bring out the formal attires- saris, salwar kameez sets and gowns- along with a gorgeous pair of heels. Be glamourous, but do not go heavy on every aspect of your outfit. For example, with clothes heavily designed with stones and sequins, opt for light jewellery so that your youth does not get overshadowed between layers and layers of makeup and accessories.
