Man killed in clash with cops after villager murdered by thieves

A villager was killed in a clash with cops over a theft incident that left another man dead in Companyganj upazila of Sylhet today.

The deceased are Dillu Mia, 70, and Mofiz Ali, 60, reports our Moulvibazar correspondent.

Dillu Mia died while trying to prevent a group of thieves at his house at Mostafanagar village in the upazila around 4:00 am, Altaf Hossein, officer-in-Charge of Companyganj Police Station, confirmed The Daily Star.

The villagers managed to catch one of the thieves, Sonai Mia of Lucky village, when they were fleeing the scene after the murder, the OC said.

Locals kept the thief captive till police reached the village around 7:00am, he added.

As police rushed to the scene, villagers picked up a quarrel with them bringing allegation that they did nothing to stop these theft incidents in the village.

As the locals became furious, police opened fire killing Mofiz Ali on the spot, Nasrin Jahan Fatema, upazila vice chairman of Companyganj, told our correspondent.
