DU students counter Home Economics girls
As Home Economics College girls besieged Nilkhet for the fourth day, Dhaka University students today started protests against the “illogical demand” of the affiliate institute.
Dhaka University students went on a sit-in near the vice-chancellor’s residence this morning in protest, Proctor AM Amzad Ali told The Daily Star this morning.
The proctor said, university authorities have already decided that affiliated institutions will not be allowed to use the DU logo in issuing certificates and other purposes.
The agitating Dhaka University students presented a five-point charter:
-Bar on using DU logo and name by affiliate institutions
-Separate convocation for DU students
-Bar on affiliate bodies to use DU logo and monogram on certificates
-Separate policy for affiliated institutions
Jahid Al Asad, a fourth-year student of management department, read out the charter while agitating in front of the vice-chancellor’s office.
The DU proctor assured the students of meeting their demands. The students however gave an ultimatum until Monday to this end, otherwise they warned of going on a strike.
Some were even wielding banners demanding scrapping of all ties with Home Economics College.
The girls of Home Economics College started an indefinite strike boycotting classes and blocking Nilkhet demanding their institute be declared an institute of Dhaka University.
In continuation, they besieged Nilkhet intersection in Dhaka this morning – blocking the key New Market road and causing traffic gridlock on the road and adjoining areas.
‘It’s not a matter of whim’
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid has slammed the protests of Home Economics College students and said the decision in this regard “is not a matter of whim”.
“The institution is already affiliated with Dhaka University and the students’ demand of recognising it as a separate institute of the university is not a matter of whim,” he said.
The concerned Dhaka University has to take a decision on this, he said in response to a query at a press briefing held at his Secretariat office.
