The LGRD ministry on Sunday suspended him, for the second time, saying that a Rajshahi court accepted charge sheets against him in two cases filed more than two years back under the Explosive Substances Act.

Bulbul was first suspended on May 7, 2015 by the ministry as he was charge sheeted in three criminal cases including a murder that occurred during BNP-led 20-party alliance blockade. A Rajshahi court the same year accepted the charges sheets of the cases.

Later, Bulbul filed a writ petition with the High Court, challenging the suspension order.

The HC on March 10 last year declared the suspension illegal. The government then moved to the Supreme Court which upheld the HC verdict on March 5 this year.

Bulbul, also president of Rajshahi City BNP, is an accused in 17 cases filed over incidents of arson and violence during the anti-government agitation in 2015. Charge sheets in five of the cases have so far been accepted by courts.

He was elected mayor in June 2013.

Meanwhile, the HC today stayed the government order suspending Meherpur’s Mujibnagar upazila Chairman Amirul Islam and its Vice President Jarjis Hossain.

The court also issued two separate rulings asking the government to explain why the suspension order should not be declared illegal.

The HC bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman came up with the order and rulings following separate writ petitions filed by Amirul and Jarjis challenging the legality of the suspension order.

The LGRD ministry on April 2, suspended Amirul and Jarjis after a Meherpur court accepted charge sheet in 2 separate criminal cases against them.

Meanwhile, the government has filed a petition with the SC seeking stay on the suspension order of Ariful.
