Rana Plaza movie meant to highlight worker rights: Director (video)

The Rana Plaza movie that portrays the worst workplace disaster in world history aims to speak for garment workers’ rights, its director says.

“I intend to spread the message for safer workplace for the RMG workers,” Nazrul Islam Khan, director of the movie, told The Daily Star.

The plot of the movie revolves around Reshma, the girl who was rescued from rubble 17 days after Rana Plaza caved in and claimed at least 1,135 lives on April 24, 2013.

The incident spread a shock throughout the world.

In an exclusive interview with The Daily Star, director of the movie said that he thought about making a movie out of the “tragically historic event” immediately after the incident happened.

“This is the first time in Bangladesh that a movie will speak for RMG workers’ rights,” said Islam.

He believes the film will make both the RMG owners and workers aware of workplace safety”.

He said he wanted to make the Rana Plaza disaster a commemorative event. Part of his inspiration was drawn from the urge to “become an element of this historical tragedy”, he added.

The director believes after this movie, the audience will encourage him to make more life-event-related movies in the future, which will include militancy and fundamentalism.

Last month, the High Court slapped a six-month ban on its screening after a petitioner asked for so saying that the motion picture had inappropriate scenes.

Today, lifting of the ban, the Supreme Court cleared the way for its screening.
