The Awami League today alleged that BNP is doing politics with the affected people in the haor areas.

AL Joint General Secretary Mahabubul Alam Hanif made the remarks this afternoon, a day into a team of the ruling party visited different flood affected haor areas, reports Bangla daily, Prothom Alo.

Hanif, who led the team during the visit on Thursday, was speaking at a press conference at AL’s Dhanmondi office in Dhaka.

“BNP is doing politics with the sufferings of the waterlogged people instead of helping them, which is very unfortunate and shameful,” he said.

“We have visited the flood affected areas of Sunamganj, Moulvibazar and Netrokona. Almost 80 percent of crops have been damaged in the flashflood. We have been continuously assisting them,” he said.

Hanif also said: “The process of water purification is continuing. We have urged the farmers not to catch fish for the next seven days. We have also requested the NGOs not to collect loan instalments from the affected farmers.”

Replying to a query, he said, the flood has been triggered as the under construction embankment collapsed and there have been allegations of corruption in the construction. “Investigation is underway. The concerned official has been withdrawn and nobody will be spared if found to be involved in corruption.”
