Jamalpur housewife branded with hot iron for dowry

A housewife in Jamalpur is groaning in anguish on hospital bed after she was allegedly branded with a hot iron by her husband over dowry.

The victim was identified as Selina Begum, 22, daughter of Abdul Khalek of Bakshiganj Upazila. She married to one Rafiqul Islam of the same upazila, reports our Jamalpur correspondent.

Selina is undergoing treatment at Bakshiganj Upazila Health Complex and she has several injury marks on different parts of her body, said Nader Hossain, resident medical officer (RMO) of the hospital.

The doctor said she was now out of danger. “She will need time to recover from the traumatic experiences she went through.”

Meanwhile, her husband Rafiqul is on the run, police said.

Rafiqul rented a house last month in Board Bazar area of Gazipur, which is also his workplace.

The couple locked in an altercation on Thursday afternoon and at one stage Rafiqul tied her hands and legs and started to beat her mercilessly.

He even branded her body with hot iron rod and fled the scene as Selina became unconscious.

Later, the house owner informed her family.

“Police will provide necessary legal assistance to the family to file a case with the concerned police station in Gazipur,” Aslam Hossain, officer-in-charge of Bakshiganj Police Station.
