New York people have paid their last tributes to eminent elocutionist, architect and cultural personality Qazi Arif who passed away at a hospital there last night.

Earlier, his namaj-e-janaza was held at Jamaica Muslim Centre in New York after Maghrib prayer yesterday, reports Bangla daily Prothom Alo.

Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad in the United States gave guard of honor to the cultural personality.

The body will be flown by an Emirates Airways to Dhaka from New York at 10:00pm (US local time) today, the daily reported.

Doctors at Mount Sinai St. Luke's hospital in New York withdrew life support from him around 10:55pm (BST) yesterday in front of his family members.

Arif was on life support as his health condition deteriorated following a heart operation at the hospital on April 25. He was 65.

He was born on October 31, 1952 at Rajbari in the then greater Faridpur. He grew up and took his education in Chittagong. He got his higher academic degree from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet).
