Father, son killed in Khagrachari over land dispute

A father and his son were allegedly killed and two women were critically injured following a feud over land in Khagrachari Sadar upazila last evening.

The deceased were identified as Chiranjit Tripura, 55, and his son Karna Tripura, 30, our local correspondent reports quoting police.

Critically injured Vabalaxmi Tripura, 45, and her daughter-in-law Bijli Tripura, 28, are now undergoing treatment at Khagrachari Sadar Hospital, police said.

The family alleged that Karna’s son, aged around seven, went missing immediately after the incident.

Some 25 to 30 people led by a local UP member Kalibandhu Tripura launched an attack on Chiranjit’s house in Thali Para area of the upazila around 7:00pm, police said.

The miscreants reportedly stabbed the two and then shot at them leaving Chiranjit dead on the spot and Karna succumbed to his injuries at the Sadar hospital, police said.

There had been a long-standing feud over a piece of land between the UP member and the family, said Tareq Mohammad Abdul Hannan, officer-in-charge of Khagrachari Sadar Police Station.

In 2016, Kalibandhu and his son Jatindra Tripura were arrested along with arms, the OC said.
