Students vandalise vehicles as cops foil demo at Shahbagh
Students vandalised at least 10 vehicles when police foiled their processions at Shahbagh in Dhaka today.
The chaos took place when students under banner of Bangabandhu Diploma Medical Student’s Association tried to bring out a procession from the intersection with four-point demand.
Law enforcers lobbed several tear gas canisters and used water cannons to disperse the protesters. At least 10 to 15 vehicles were vandalised near Birdem hospital around 12:30pm.
Meanwhile, law enforcers foiled another procession brought out by Bangladesh Samajtantrik Chhatra Front at Shahbagh and detained several people around 1:10pm, our correspondent reports from scene.
Our correspondent at the scene saw police picking up 10 to 12 people.
The leftist organisation brought out the procession to besiege the University Grants Commission (UGC) in protest against what they say “education business” in the name of night courses and demanding more grants in research.
At least 15 police officials including two female officers took treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) complaining of sickness from the tear gas fumes, according to DMCH sources.
