Many happy returns, Kumar Bishwajit!
With an illustrious music career, Kumar Bishwajit has etched a special place in the hearts of Bangla music lovers of at least two generations. Today is a special day for his fans, for it is the acclaimed singer's birthday. In a recent conversation with The Daily Star, Kumar Bishwajit imparts some words of wisdom as well as his reflections on the special occasion.
How do you plan to spend your birthday this year?
Kumar Bishwajit: Birthdays were a lot more charming when I was younger, as I was able to savour the moments and live in the present. However, now I am more aware of my mortality with every year passing by. I don't have any special plans today, as I won't be able to spend time with my family. There are some pressing engagements in Chittagong so I have to be there. But it fills me with great pleasure to receive everyone's wishes, so that is what I look forward to.
If you could have three wishes granted, what would they be?
Kumar Bishwajit: I would love to lead a healthy, simple life, and to leave behind a generation free from afflictions or worry. Secondly, I would like to sing many more good songs. My last wish would be to be born again, in this beautiful country.
If you could celebrate your birthday anywhere else in the world today, where would it be and why?
Kumar Bishwajit: I'm not really a believer of big celebrations. Whenever I ask my mother about when I was born, she always responded with, “It was during jaishtha month, on a Friday.” It is more important for me to know that I have fulfilled my responsibilities in my career, as a son, a husband, and a father. But it feels special regardless, as everyone around the world remembers me on this token special day, no matter where I am.
What is relevant in your life today that wasn't five years ago?
Kumar Bishwajit: Five years ago, I was a more whimsical person, and more desperate in my achievements as well as a risk taker. Today I am more cool and calculative, and take each step decisively.
What advice would you give on ageing gracefully?
Kumar Bishwajit: One must be sincere, dedicated, and hardworking in whatever they do. For even if you cannot achieve your dreams at the end of it all, you will still have a lot to gain.
