Hearing on plea challenging HC verdict on 3 Indian TV channels Oct 22

The Supreme Court has fixed October 22 for hearing an appeal filed challenging a High Court verdict that cleared the way for running telecast of three Indian channels -- Star Jalsha, Star Plus and Zee Bangla in Bangladesh.

Chamber judge of the Appellate Division of the SC Justice Hasan Foez Siddique set the date after holding a brief hearing on the appeal on Tuesday.

The HC on January 29 rejected a writ petition filed by Syeda Shahin Ara Laily, a SC lawyer, seeking its directive on the government to stop the three Indian television channels in Bangladesh.

The HC rejected the petition saying that it was not acceptable as the petitioner did not lodge any complaint with the competent authorities of the government against the Indian television channels.

Advocate Laily submitted the writ petition to the HC in September 2014, saying that programmes broadcast by the three channels left adverse impact on social and cultural life of Bangladeshi people.

Laily on Monday filed the appeal with the SC challenging the HC verdict.

Laily's lawyer Advocate Aklas Uddin Bhuiyn today told The Daily Star a full bench of the Appellate Division will hear the appeal on October 22.
