Ekramul murder accused killed in Feni ‘gunfight’

One of the prime accused in Fulgazi upazila chairman Ekramul Haque murder case was killed in an alleged gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in Feni municipality area early today.

Deceased Md Sohel alias Ruti Sohel, 35, was accused in eight criminal cases including the killing case, our Feni correspondent reports quoting Md Rashed Khan Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Feni Sadar Police Station.

Ekramul Haque, also the president of Awami League Fulgazi upazila unit, was shot and burnt to death in his car in broad daylight on May 20, 2014.

Rab-7 members conducted a raid based on information that criminals were taking preparation to commit robbery in Birinchi area 4:30am, said Squadron leader Shafayet Jamil Fahim, commander of Rab-7.

Sensing the elite force presence, the alleged robbers opened fire on them, Rab official Fahim said.

In retaliation, the Rab men fired back that triggered a “gunfight”, leaving Sohel dead on the spot, he said.

Later, a pistol, a revolver and five bullets were recovered from the spot.

The body was kept at Feni Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
