A Dhaka court today asked Ashulia police to submit by August 7 the probe report of the case filed against 54 Jahangirnagar University (JU) students on charge of vandalising the vice chancellor’s residence on May 27.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Shahinur Rahman passed the order after Ashulia police failed to submit the probe report today.

Meanwhile, 54 JU students, now on bail, appeared before the court as it was the scheduled date for their appearance.

Later, over 60 JU students, including the 54 accused in the case, formed a human chain at the court premises to press home their six-point demand including immediate withdrawal of the case and reformation of the probe body.

On May 26, marketing student Nazmul Hasan Rana, 24, and microbiology student Arafat, 24, were killed as a bus rammed a human-hauler carrying them on Dhaka-Aricha highway in C&B bus stand area of Savar.

Protesting the incident, agitating students blocked the highway with some demands, including installation of speed breakers, when police fired rubber bullets and tear gas shells to disperse them.

Later, they besieged the VC’s house to know why such action was taken against them when the 42 including 12 female students were held and later were shown arrested in the vandalism case. The next day, all the 42 were released on bail.
