3 dead men sued over Gazipur factory blast

Three dead people have been sued in the boiler blast at Gazipur’s apparel factory Multifabs Ltd, that left at least 13 people dead and several others injured.

Chakrabarti police camp Assistant Sub-Inspector Abdur Rashid filed the lawsuit last night with Joydebpur Police Station, reports Bangla daily Prothom Alo.

Those three named were boiler operator Abdus Salam, Ershad Hossain and Mansurul Huq – all of whom died in the blast. Apart from the three named, anonymous 10 others were sued in the lawsuit.

The lawsuit alleged, the trio started the boiler ignoring safety concerns.

Joydebpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Aminul Islam said the blast took place because of the three named accused. “That is why they were charged in the case.”

After investigation, others will be implicated in the case, he said.

Ain O Salish Kendra blames owners

Expressing deep concerns over the boiler blast, rights body Ain O Salish Kendra today demanded compensation for the victims.

A press release, signed by its Executive Director Sheepa Hafiza, said that the workers of Multifabs Limited had informed the owners of glitch in the boiler.

“But the authorities didn’t take any effective measurers in that regard,” the ASK release read.

ASK called upon the government to take stern action against the factory authorities to ensure safety of the workers.

It also demanded for fair probe into incident, treatment, rehabilitation and compensation for the victims.

The death toll from Monday's boiler explosion rose to 13 yesterday, showing once again that boilers are becoming a major source of industrial disasters due to lack of proper inspection and use of outdated boilers.
