SC denies bail to Destiny MD, chairman

Rafiqul Amin and Mohammad Hossain

The Supreme Court today refused to grant bail to two top Destiny officials – Md Rafiqul Amin and Mohammad Hossain – as they did not act in accordance with an earlier order of the High Court in two money laundering cases.

“If the accused are granted bail, they will not pay the money,” the apex court said adding that they will not be found if they are released on bail.

Earlier on November 13, last year Destiny Group Managing Director Rafiqul and Destiny Multipurpose Cooperative Society Ltd Chairman Mohammad Hossain were granted bail by the High Court only if they pay the government Tk 2,800 crore in six weeks by selling 35 lakh matured trees planted under the company's tree plantation project.

The apex court also directed the Destiny officials to submit their bank statements before this court by July 16.

A three-member bench of the Appellate Division of the SC passed the order during hearing two petitions filed by Rafiqul and Hossain.

In the petition, the duo sought modification of the November 13 HC order and also sought bail in the cases.

The court fixed July 16 for further hearing of the petitions.
