Proteas should get an Australian coach: Gibbs
South Africa are expected to get a new head coach after the conclusion of the Test series against England.
Former South Africa batsman Herschelle Gibbs says that the team should hire an Australian who won’t tolerate a ‘buddy-buddy’ kind of attitude.
Current head coach Russell Domingo’s contract expires in August and while he is likely to re-apply for the job, reports suggest that CSA are looking to go into a different direction with a new head coach.
Gibbs prefer an Australian because of their no nonsense attitude.
He told Netwerk 24: "I like their (Australians') approach to the game and the fact that they don't put up with nonsense.
"I'd like to see a new approach. Something new and fresh won't do any harm.
"I think that can only be achieved through outside input."
Several former Australian players are currently available for the role of Proteas head coach.
Tom Moody was among the five people who were recently interviewed for the India job.
Jason Gilespie, who took over the role of Papua New Guinea coach in an interim basis, has an impressive record with Adelaide Strikers.
He was also a strong candidate for applying for the role of India’s head coach.
Justin Langer, who coached Gibbs at Perth Scorchers is known to be passionate and disciplined, writes Cricket Australia site.
Gibbs feels that some players in the current South Africa setup have a ‘buddy-buddy’ attitude with the coach.
"That is a bunch of nonsense," he said.
"The coach needs to be in control and for that reason I believe an Australia coach – who won't tolerate this 'buddy-buddy attitude' – could work."
Domingo is currently in South Africa after the unexpected passing of his mother, who recently suffered from a car crash last month.
