3 muggers to die for killing man in Dhaka
A Dhaka court today sentenced three muggers to death for killing Mohammad Alamgir Hossain, an employee of a shoe factory in the city’s Siddique Bazar area in August 2009.
The convicts are: Mohammad Jonny, Hassan alias Kalu and Monir Hossain. Of them, Jonny, now in jail, was brought at court during judgment while Monir and Kalu were given sentence in their absence.
The punishment of the fugitives will be effective from the day of their arrest or surrender, the judge said.
Judge Moshiur Rahman Chowdhury of the Paribesh Appeal Adalat (District & Sessions Judge) of Dhaka handed down the sentence in presence of the convict Jonny after cross-examination of 14 prosecution witnesses.
According to the prosecution, it was alleged that three muggers chased him (victim) at around 3:30am on August 13 of 2009 in front of Shyampur High School when he along with his nephew Monjur Hossain were returning home from their work place.
The muggers asked them to hand over what they had. Then, they stabbed and slaughtered Alamgir when he refused to give the money.
Later victim’s wife Laila Akhter filed a case with Kadamtoli Police Station accusing unknown persons. Police then arrested the three muggers who had given confessional statements before magistrates. But Monir and Kalu went into hiding after getting bail from the High Court.
After an investigation, police pressed charges against the three on November 22 of 2009.
