10 hurt as garment workers clash with cops in Mirpur

At least 10 people including two police officials were injured as workers of a garment factory clashed the law enforcers in Mirpur area of Dhaka today.

The workers of Meridian Fashions Limited at Mirpur-1 staged demonstration around 11:00am in front of Mollick Tower demanding due salaries and bonuses, Masud Ahmed, deputy commissioner of police (Mirpur division), told The Daily Star.

The clash ensued when police tried to disperse the agitating workers from the spot.

The angry workers also vandalised several vehicles and threw bricks chips to nearby garments factory, police said.

“Our two police men were injured in the clash," said Jasim Uddin Mollah, additional deputy commissioner of police (Mirpur division). Besides, the agitating workers said around 10 of their fellow workers were injured in the police action.

Witness and police said the workers this morning found a notice hanging at the factory gate that reads the garments will be shut off till Wednesday to stop the illegal workers protest.

Witnessing the notice, the worker took to the street and started demonstration around 8.00am and they also called workers of some nearby garments to join with them.

As soon as some other garment factory workers join them, they blockaded the road of Mirpur-1 and Zoo Road around 10:30am, creating a long tailback in the area. They continued thier demonstration there for around 10  hours. A long tailback was created from in front of Sony Cinema Hall to Technical intersecton.

Terming workers’ protest illegal, the authorities of Meridian Fashions Limited shut their installation up to Wednesday. A notice issued in this regard is found at the gate of the factory. Photo: Shaheen Mollah

The workers withrew thier agitation around 8:30pm after the authorities concerned assured them of reopening the factory tomorrow.

Around 700 workers used to work at the factory, a staff of the factory told the correspondent.
