5 killed as train hits auto-rickshaw in Jamalpur

Five people were killed and three others injured as a train crashed into a battery-run auto-rickshaw in Jamalpur town this evening.

The deceased are: Sanowar Hossain, 28, Entaz Ali, 45, Hossain Ali, 45, of Kompapur area and Mir Hossain, 30, and auto-rickshaw driver Abdur Rahim, 45, of Chandra area in the town, our local correspondent reports.

The accident took place when the Dewanganj-bound local train from Mymensingh hit the auto-rickshaw while passing the Chandra level crossing in the town around 6:30pm, said Nasimul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sadar Police Station in the district.

Sanowar died on the spot while three others -- Entaz, Mir Hossain and Rahim -- succumbed to their injuries on way to a local hospital, the OC added.

While the injured victims were being taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH), Hossain Ali died on the way around 8:30pm, his father Nawshed told our correspondent. 

The other injured were taken to the MMCH with critical injuries.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Jamalpur Rasel Subrin visited the spot and declared to provide Tk 10,000 each family of the deceased for their burial.
