De Villiers debate spreads vitriol on twitter
Debates surrounding De Villiers’s absence from Test cricket have spread among former cricketers on social media platform twitter and the debate turned bitter.
Former South Africa players Herschelle Gibbs and Ashwell Prince have slammed AB De Villers for his continued absence from Test cricket and insinuated that he is disrespecting his teammates.
After skipper Faf du Plessis said this week that de Villiers had "earned the right to do whatever he wants to" in regards to his playing future, Gibbs slammed the current captain for "putting a player on a pedestal!", reports cricket.com.au.
Interesting article this..captain putting a player on a pedestal! Never thought I'd see this..anyway pic.twitter.com/F6u17j0sVD Herschelle Gibbs (@hershybru) August 11, 2017
Gibbs kept comparing De Villiers to legendary all-rounder Jacques Kallis and nsaid ‘nobody is bigger than the game. He also kept reminding that Kallis achieved more than De Villiers but never treated the team in this way.
Kallis achieved more than ab ever will but he kept on playing and never disrespected the team and the game.remember that Herschelle Gibbs (@hershybru) August 11, 2017
Kallis achieved more than ab ever will, played longer than him to..he made his decision to retire on his own not keep anybody hanging. Herschelle Gibbs (@hershybru) August 11, 2017
Has nothing to with administrators..that's the national captain speaking! Did smith ever say kallis could do that? and he achieved more Herschelle Gibbs (@hershybru) August 11, 2017
Former player and now national cricketer Ashwell Prince weighed in on the subject.
Ridiculous statement @hershybru just wondering at which point then @amlahash will be allowed to do what he wants. Soon it's free for all. https://t.co/UtzYmi2daz Ashwell Prince (@ashyp_5) August 11, 2017
As ex players why not pick up the phone and call him instead of having a go on Twitter. #justathought paul harris (@paulharris12) August 11, 2017
Oh wow! Love it when true colors come out. In case you didn't realize, it's 2017, everyone's entitled to an opinion. But we understand.... https://t.co/L5fZJ1zifk Ashwell Prince (@ashyp_5) August 11, 2017
Du Plessis confirmed this week that while de Villiers had not officially retired from the five-day game, he was not expected back in the white clothing any time soon.
"The last time I spoke to him, he wasn’t keen to play yet again," Du Plessis said. "So from my point of view I’m not expecting him to come back.
"Whether we win or lose people always want AB to play, because he is the best player in the team.
