Anam Rangs Plaza fire under control

The fire that broke out this afternoon at Anam Rangs Plaza, a commercial building in Dhanmondi area of Dhaka, has been brought under control.

Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control around 6:40pm, after two and a half hours of their frantic effort, Lt Col M Mosharraf Hossain, director (training) of Fire Service and Civil Defence, told reporters on the spot.

No one was reported to be injured in the fire, he added.

Smoke was seen coming out of the third-floor of the six-storey building on Road No. 6/A in Dhanmondi area around 4:01pm, Farid Uddin, an operator of Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarter, told The Daily Star.

Seventeen units of firefighters were trying to douse the fire till last reported at 7:30pm, he said.

Witnesses suspected that the fire originated from cylinder blast at the kitchen of Delicious Fast Food restaurant on the third-floor of the building.

“Hearing a big bang, we saw smoke coming out of the kitchen,” Md Jony, an employee of Endless Ladies Shoes and Bags, told The Daily Star.

The fire gutted a shop completely and two others partly, said Rakibul Haque, executive member of the traders’ association.

Adjacent streets were closed for some time this evening following the incident.
