8 to die for murder in Habiganj
Eight people were sentenced to die and eleven others imprisoned for life by a Habiganj court today in a murder case in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj in 2011.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Mafruza Pervin delivered the verdict this afternoon, reports our Moulvibazar correspondent.
As a sequel to land related dispute, the convicts hacked Dewan Mahsin Tipu, son of Mahsin Master, to death after breaking into his house in the Gangail village in Madhabpur upazila on January 7, 2011.
The eight death row convicts are Ershad Ali, Abdul Malek, Musharaf, Abdul Kalam, Ataur Rahman, Abul Kashem, Sudhangsu Sen, Suvash Sen in Gangail village in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj district.
The lifers are Hormuz Ali, Mostaq Ahmed, Janu Mia, Shanu Mia, Javed Mia, Zaheer Mia, Bakul Mia, Amir Ali, Dulal Mia, Sayed Mia and Kamal Mia in Gangail village in the same upazila.
The court also acquitted three others --Shah Abdul Gani, Abu Mia and Abdul Majid -- in the case as the prosecution failed to produce enough evidence against them.
After the murder, the victim’s wife Hasina Akther Baby filed a case accusing Ershad Ali and some unknown people to Madhabpur police station on January 9, 2011.
On November 3, in 2013, CID inspector Kamruzzaman, IO of the case, submitted the charge-sheet against 22 people, said public prosecutor advocate Lutfur Rahman.
