5 killed in road crashes in 3 districts

At least five people including a minor girl and a policeman were killed in separate road crashes in Dhaka, Sherpur and Bagerhat.

In Dhaka, a CNG-run auto-rickshaw carrying three passengers overturned on the road after colliding with a private car at High Court mazar area around 9:30am, police said.

Wounded, Meem, 4, and her father Kamruzzaman and mother Sonia Begum, were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the minor girl succumbed to her injuries around 3:00pm, said Abul Kalam Azad, officer-in-charge (operation) of Shahbagh Police Station.

Police however detained the CNG driver in this connection, he added.

Kamruzzaman along with his wife and daughter were going to Sadarghat on their way to village home in Bhola from Chand Housing of Mohammadpur in Dhaka, Azad also said.

In Bagerhat, a goods-laden truck knocked down an unidentified female pedestrian while she was crossing Khulna-Mawa Highway at Mollahat upazila around 8:30am, leaving her critically injured, reports UNB.

Locals took the woman to Mollahat Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared her dead, Mollahat Police Station OC ANM Khairul Anam told the news agency.

Meanwhile, police constable Miraj Shikdar, 30, son of Ashraf Ali Shikdar, a resident of Gimtekathi village in Kachua upazila, was killed and one of his relatives injured in a road accident at Maghia last night.

When the duo reached Maghia in a motorcycle, the two-wheeler hit a roadside tree around 8:30pm, leaving the constable dead on the spot and his relative injured, said Kachua Police Station OC M Kabirul Islam.

The injured was admitted to Kachua Upazila Health Complex, the OC added.

Earlier, in Sherpur, two people died and six others were injured after a private car collided head-on with a battery-run auto-rickshaw in Jhinaigati area last night.

Bangla daily Prothom Alo reports, the deceased were identified as Shaheb Ali, 70, and Firoz Mia, 17, both hailing from Jhinaigati upazila of the district.

The incident took place around 7:30pm last night when the two vehicles collided head-on in Tetultala area of Sherpur-Jhinaigati road. Ali died on the spot.

The injured were rushed to Sherpur Sadar Hospital where Firoz succumbed.

Jhinaigati Police Station Officer-in-Charge Biplab Kumar Biswas confirmed the deaths and said both the vehicles were seized and the drivers nabbed. A case will be filed in this regard.
