Rohingyas building new slum in Ukhia

The remote plateau of Bagghuna surrounded by small hills was a void piece of green land even a few days ago in Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhia upazila.

But today, it is jostling with activities. Rohingyas, the Myanmar nationals who have fled their homes in Rakhine state following persecution, have taken refuge there.

They have started building new homes in the plateau that sits in Jamtali area of Palangkhali union. Structures mostly made with bamboos were erected since last night.

Mozaffar Hossain, acting chairman of Palangkhali Union Parishad, confirmed The Daily Star of the development. No other officials could be reached at this time.

Though an estimate could not be officially obtained of the population there and no confirmation on whether they were fresh influx, the chairman put the number to be around 10,000.

According to United Nations, over 150,000 Rohingyas have fled into Bangladesh to escape the persecution in Rakhine state. As many as 65 of them died during the voyage through sea.
