JS to discuss 16th amendment verdict today
The parliament will likely be discussing steps to expunge the “unconstitutional, objectionable and irrelevant” observations of the 16th constitutional amendment verdict today.
Moinuddin Khan Badal, lawmaker from Chittagong-8, is likely to place the proposal to discuss on the verdict, the business schedule of today’s parliament read.
The Supreme Court on July 3 upheld the annulment of 16th amendment to the constitution that had empowered the parliament to impeach judges for misconduct or incapacity.
In 2014, the government amended the constitution to restore parliament’s authority to impeach judges on grounds of misconduct or incapacity.
The annulment accompanied by elaborate observations that strongly criticised the government’s role in running the country, sparked uproar within the ruling coalition.
Ruling lawmakers launched a series of protests against the verdict and demands went as far as to call for resignation of Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina herself strictly criticised the observations in the verdict.
