Hefajat wants end to killing of Rohingyas
Hefajat-e Islam, a Qawmi madrasa-based radical organisation, yesterday submitted memorandums to Myanmar embassy in Dhaka and office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Bangaldesh to stop ethnic cleansing of Rohingyas in Myanmar.
As per its scheduled programme, several thousand Hefajat men from the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque headed for Myanmar embassy to lay siege to it, but police intercepted them near Shantinagar in the capital.
Later, a 12-member delegation of Hefajat handed over the memorandums to the embassy and the office of the UN Resident Coordinator, said a press release of the organisation.
Earlier, Hefajat held a rally in front of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque and urged the government to launch a vigorous diplomatic campaign to save Rohingyas in Myanmar.
Their rally and procession halted traffic in Paltan, Kakrail and Shantinagar areas for hours, causing sufferings to the commuters.
Over 400,000 Rohingyas fled persecution in Buddhist-majority Myanmar to Bangladesh in the last three weeks.
The influx was triggered by Myanmar army's response to alleged insurgent attacks on 30 police posts and an army base in Rakhine State on August 25.
