Law Minister Anisul Huq today said that his government must go for a “legal challenge” to reinstate the 16th amendment to the constitution protecting independence of the country’s judiciary.

He said the government has brought the 16th amendment to the constitution by reforming Article 96 of the constitution to protect the independence in the judiciary and continuation of the democracy.

“But they (High Court and Supreme Court) annulled the 16th amendment. We will go for a legal challenge. We must gain victory in restoration of the 16th amendment to the constitution,” Anisul expressed his government’s determination while addressing a programme in Brahmanbaria.

Claiming that the government is examining all aspects of the 16th amendment verdict, Aniusl said that the government will go for review petition to keep the country’s constitution unbiased.

The government has brought the 16th amendment to the constitution by reforming Article 96 of the constitution that restored parliament's power to remove SC judges for misconduct or incapacity, alleged some civil society members.

The apex court on August 1 released the full text of its verdict, scrapping the 16th amendment to the constitution.
