Kushtia AL activist killed in ‘gunfight’
An activist of ruling Awami League with criminal background was killed in what police described as “gunfight” in Kushtia’s Daulatpur today.
The deceased was Miraz Hasan Teny, 26, a local and the key accused in murder of another AL man three months ago, our local correspondent reports.
Police received intelligence of criminals gathering in Baliadanga area of Pipulbaria village in the wee hours of today, said Daulatpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shah Dara Khan.
Sensing presence of police, the criminals opened fire. Police were forced to retaliate with gunfire, he said. “The gunfight lasted around half-an-hour.”
The criminals, at one stage, fled the spot leaving behind a dead body. Later, police identified the deceased as Teny, a man wanted for 11 cases including two for murder, the OC added.
Police recovered a foreign pistol and two bullets from the spot.
Kamarul Arefin, joint general secretary of the Kushtia upazila chapter of the Awami League, told The Daily Star Teny was an active activist of the upazila unit.
