A court in Chittagong today sentenced three operatives of banned militant outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) including Boma Mizan to seven years of imprisonment each in two cases filed in connection with hurling bombs towards judges in court rooms.

The convicts are- Chittagong JMB Commander Jabed Iqbal alias Mohammed alias Aman Ullah, Shahadat Ali alias Masum Billah and Jahidul Islam alias Boma Mizan, said court sources.

“The court of Chittagong Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Md Shahadat Hossain Bhuiyan delivered the verdicts in presence of Jabed and Shahadat after the court found them guilty beyond doubt,” Additional Public Prosecutor Humayun Kanbir told The Daily Star.

Advocate Humayun said the court also fined the three JMB operatives Tk 5,000 each, in default they have to serve six months more in jail.

“The convicts were awarded seven years of imprisonment in each of the two cases and the punishment will be executed simultaneously”, added the additional PP.

According to the court sources and case documents, JMB operatives carried out bomb attacks in courtrooms of Metropolitan Magistrate Akram Hossain and 2nd Disitrict Judge Syeyd Dildar Hossen in Chittagong on October 3, 2005.

Keeping bombs inside two big books, the JMB operatives threw those targeting two judges in the court rooms but luckily the bombs did not exploded and then the lawyers and police caught Shahadat Ali.

Later, two cases were filed with Kotwali Police Station accusing five JMB men including Boma Mizan in connection with the attempt to murder on the same day.

After the probe, police submitted the charge sheet implicating five persons while a court framed the charges against the militants on July 2007.
