'Missing' Sharishabari mayor rescued in Moulvibazar
Police rescued the mayor of Sharishabari municipality in Jamalpur today, two days after he went missing from Dhaka.
Md Rokonuzzaman Rokon, 40, was found at a tea garden in Kalighat union parishad area in Srimongol upazila of Moulvibazar in an unconscious state with his hands and legs tied up, our Moulvibazar correspondent reports quoting Md Shahjalal, superintendant of the district police.
Gourlal Vumij, security guard of Kalighat union parishad, told The Daily Star that a man was crying saying “save me, save me, they will kill me” on union parishad premises around 12:30pm.
Then, Vumij took him to union parishad office and informed UP Chairman Pranesh Goala about the matter over phone.
On information, the UP chairman, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) and office-in-charge of Srimongol Police Station rushed to the spot and identified the man as the municipality mayor Rokon.
“I had been kept blindfolded all these days. I know nothing how I came here,” Kalighat UP Chairman Pranesh Goala quoted Rokon as saying.
Last reported, Rokon was taken to the office of superintendent of police (SP) in Moulvibazar.
SP Mohammad Shahjalal said they found incompatibility of his speech as he could not clearly say how he came here.
“He is physically stable, but he is very frightened,” the police official said.
Rokon allegedly went missing after he went out for a walk from his residence at Uttara Sector 13 in Dhaka around 9:30am on Monday, Sayed AZ Morshed Ali, upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) of Sharishabari upazila, told our Jamalpur correspondent.
