Primary school torched in Tangail
Unidentified miscreants set fire to a primary school in Kalihati upazila of Tangail early today.
The fire originated at the tin-shed structure of Bashi Government Primary School around 1:45am, Jayeda Khatun, headmistress of the school, told our local correspondent.
"The fire ravaged 45 benches, some tables and blackboards in three classrooms," she said, adding that locals doused the flame after an hour of their frantic effort.
No classes were held at the school today, she further said.
Freedom Fighter Dr Hasen Ali, former president of the school's managing committee, alleged that some influential people of the village might have been involved in the arson attack.
They had previously damaged some assets, claiming ownership of parts of the school's lands, he noted.
Contacted, Shamsul Haque, upazila primary education officer in Kalihati, said he had already visited the school and directed its headmistress for filing a general diary with the local police station.
The school was established in 1947 on a nine decimal plot donated by Komol Basini, a local Hindu solvent person.
