Tofa and Tohura, the separated conjoined twins from Gaibandha, have been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) early today and are now undergoing treatment.

Professor Shahnoor Islam of DMCH’s Paediatrics Surgery told The Daily Star that the twins were admitted to the hospital around 4:00am today.

It is suspected that Tohura is suffering from infection in blood, Professor Shahnoor said, adding that her blood sample has been taken for diagnosis.

“She [Tohura] is not out of danger yet,” she further said, adding that Tofa, however, is doing fine.

A medical board of DMCH, which supervised the surgery of the conjoined twins earlier in August, will decide on the next move on her treatment after the blood tests’ reports are available, she said.

Tohura had fever and nausea, lost weight, and could only be breast-fed.

“Her vomiting still persists and she still cannot have anything other than breast milk,” the doctor also said.

The twins were referred to DMCH when they were taken to Gaibandha General Hospital yesterday after Tohura fell ill, their mother Shahida Begum earlier said.
