Monkeys in a Sylhet shrine were thriving but as the number of visitors dropped, so did the monkey's food supply. Now, more than 500 monkeys are starving. Left with no other option, they have resorted to sneaking food away from the homes of locals. The human and ape conflict has reached such a level that locals have reportedly killed a few monkeys. Some hijras force a bus passenger to disembark and pay them money. This form of extortion is quite common in many city areas. The government recognised hijras as a third-gender in 2013 but it has not brought many benefits, forcing many to turn to crime. Photo: Rashed Shumon

Maybe they are getting late or perhaps there is a shortage of transport. But it does not make up for the excuse considering that this woman and the two children could have gotten into a fatal accident as they try to get on a moving bus in the middle of a street amid oncoming traffic. This haphazard stopping of buses not only increases the chance of accidents, but also creates traffic congestion. Most of the capital's streets are missing planned stops where people can get on and off buses without risking their lives. The photo was taken in the College Gate area near Suhrawardy hospital yesterday around noon. Photo: Rashed Shumon
Instead of paddling, this man pulls a rickshaw-van through a waterlogged portion of the Tejgaon Station Road in the capital to avoid any unwanted accident. A major portion of the road has been in a dilapidated condition for almost a year. In addition to a poor drainage system, construction materials and garbage are also left on the road, escalating sufferings of the commuters and residents. Locals alleged that they have contacted both the railways and the city corporation officials, but none took any step to repair the road. The photo was taken yesterday. Photo: Anisur Rahman
