HC bail of industrialist Ragib Ali upheld
The Supreme Court today upheld a High Court order that granted bail to industrialist Ragib Ali and his son Abdul Hye who were convicted of forging legal papers for grabbing an endowed land of Tarapur Tea Estate in Sylhet.
A four member bench of the Appellate Division of the SC headed by Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah, who is now performing the functions of the chief justice, dismissed a leave to appeal petition filed by the government challenging the HC order of bail.
There is no legal bar for Ragib Ali and Abdul Hye to get released from Sylhet jail following the apex court order, their lawyer Barrister Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury told The Daily Star.
A Sylhet court on February 2 this year handed down six years' imprisonment to them for fabricating legal papers of Tarapur Tea Estate.
Following a bail petition filed by Ragib and Hye, the HC on August 29 this year granted them bail in the case.
Following a government petition, the SC chamber judge later stayed the HC bail order to them.
Later the government submitted the leave to appeal petition to the SC challenging the HC order.
