Don’t check goods-laden vehicles on highways: IGP

Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque today instructed police officials not to check trucks, covered vans in the middle highways unless specific complaint.

The police chief gave the instruction in a meeting with owners and workers of goods-laden vehicles at the police headquarters in Dhaka to ensure smooth traffic movement on the highways and transportation of goods at destinations timely, according to a media release.

Amid the transport workers’ allegation of extortion and harassment on highways, IGP asked police officials to check trucks, covered vans at the beginning and terminal points, it said.

The police chief said that stern action will be taken if anyone found taking money illegally.

He also asked the truck-covered association leaders for not to drive unfit vehicles on the highway to avoid traffic jam and accidents.

He said that vehicles should not carry additional goods over its limit and stop using the hydraulic horn.

IGP Shahidul Hoque further asked the truck-covered van associations leaders to settle down their problems by strengthening community policing.

Police HQ high officials, police superintendent of Dhaka, Narayanganj, Manikganj and Comilla were present in the discussion while Hossain Ahmed Majumder, Abul Kashem, Hazi Tofazzel Hossain Majumder were present on behalf of truck-covered van associations.
