BCL faction vandalises CU VC office room

A faction of ruling party’s student front today vandalised the office room of Chittagong University vice chancellor in continuation of their stand against a university teacher.

They vandalised a private car, a motorcycle, several 20 flower tubs in front of the VC’s office room and assaulted a television journalist, our CU correspondent reports quoting CU Assistant Proctor Niaz Morshed.

Last reported, the faction of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) was demonstrating at the entrance to the university, putting it under lock and key.

A journalist named Shahjahan Khan of Bangla Vision television channel was assaulted by the activists while he was trying to take footage of vandalism.

The faction yesterday submitted a memo to the VC demanding removal of Md Amir Uddin, an associate professor of the university's Institute of Education Research, within 24 hours.

The memorandum says, Amir, general secretary of Chattagram Kordata Surokkha Parishad, is “spreading personal enmity” against the elected representatives through social media. The parishad is a group created to protect the taxpayers of Chittagong.

In the memorandum, the BCL faction alleges that when the tax reassessment programme is being addressed peacefully and fairly through "appeals" and "discussion", the teacher was trying to “mislead” journalists by providing “false” information.

The teacher along with a businessman launched the movement after Chittagong City Corporation announced a programme in March last year to reassess the holding tax paid by house owners. The group held different programmes in the last one year, saying that due to the re-assessment, the amount of tax would increase manifold. It calls upon the city corporation to keep the tax rise at a tolerable level.

The faction, led by president of the suspended committee of BCL's CU unit Alamgir Tipu, who is known as a loyalist of Chittagong City Corporation Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, wielding with arms threatened the teacher yesterday.
