SC to get more judges after appointment of CJ: Minister

Law Minister Anisul Huq today said the shortage of Appellate Division judges will be fulfilled after the president appoints the new chief Justice.

Appointments of both CJ and Appellate Division judges are the prerogative of the president under the constitution, the minister said while addressing a programme at Prottoy Medical Hospital in capital’s Baridhara area.

“I cannot say when, where and how chief justice will be appointed...it is his (president’s) matter,” the minister told reporters in reply to a query at an anti-narcotics programme.

There is no timeframe for appointment of a chief justice under the constitution and the president will do it in his own time, Anisul said.

Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Mia, senior most judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, will carry out the responsibilities of the chief justice until the new CJ is appointed, he said.

The law minister said he will meet the Appellate Division Judges tomorrow afternoon to talk about the disciplinary rules for lower court judges where chief justice issue will not be discussed.

Current captain of the One Day Internationals for Bangladesh national cricket team Mashrafe Bin Mortaza also attended the event as special guest.
