HC seeks govt inquiry report on Kalihati firing in 60 days

The High Court today directed the government to submit the inquiry report on the incident of police firing that killed 4 persons at Kalihati in Tangail before the court in 60 days.

In response to a writ petition, the court issued a rule upon the government to explain in four weeks as to whether the police had followed the relevant legal provisions in firing on the people.

The HC bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Jafar Ahmed came with the order and rule following a writ petition filed by executive director Bangladesh National Women Lawyers' Association (BNWLA) Salma Ali.

She filed the petition on behalf of the organisation seeking directive from the HC on the authorities concerned of the government to submit the inquiry report before the court and to pay compensation to the family members of the victims

Deputy Attorney General Motahar Hossain Saju told The Daily Star that the offices of the inspector general of police, deputy inspector general of police of Dhaka range and deputy commissioner of Tangail have been conducting inquiries into the firing incident and the killing of people at Kalihati of Tangail.

The authorities concerned have to submit the inquiry report to the High Court in 60 days from receiving the HC order, he added.
