No change to constitution: Law minister

Bangladesh’s constitution will not be amended even if BNP does not participate in the next general election, Law Minister Anisul Huq said today.

“We, the countrymen, have witnessed marshal law several times due to BNP,” he said at a function of local Awami League in Brahmanbaria this afternoon.

“They (BNP) have played football with the constitution. From now, no one will be allowed to play the game again,” the law minister said at the programme.

His comments came in the purview of BNP seeking a non-partisan supportive government that would oversee the upcoming parliamentary elections.

The provision in place, as amended by the ruling Awami League, scrapped the provision of caretaker government and put polls under arrangement of an elected government.

Claiming that the next general election must be held under the supervision of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Anisul said “it doesn’t matter” whether BNP would participate in the election.

“The incumbent government will run the country and the Election Commission will hold the election, like in other democratic countries,” he added.
