EC to introduce ‘Voters’ Day’
The Election Commission has decided to observe “Voters’ Day” to encourage youngsters who are eligible to register themselves in electoral rolls and exercise their right to franchise.
“We decide to observe a day as Voters’ Day every year encouraging people to be voter,” Helaluddin Ahmed, acting secretary of the election commission, told journalists after a meeting at the Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka.
In the meeting, the commission also discussed the overall situation in Rangpur City Corporation ahead of its elections, Helaluddin said.
He said an election commissioner has already visited the city for conducting an assessment whether the commission will use the electronic voting machine (EVM) in its election.
“It has yet been finalise in which ward or centre the EVM will be used in the election. We also discussed on installation of close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras but its decision is pending too,” he added.
Chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda is scheduled to hold meeting on December 7 with contenders in the election and members of the law enforcement agencies while other commissioners will accompany him, he added.
About smart national ID card, he said distribution of the smart card will begin from December 1 in 37 districts across the country. CEC and other commissioners will inaugurate the distribution programme through video conference, he said.
He asked the people, who have lost NID card, to collect it from 10 regional offices in the country.
