Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today slammed US President Donald Trump as he declared Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on a “suo-moto move” (voluntarily).

“Trump’s decision is arbitrary and it will destabilise harmony among different communities across the world,” Hasina said while addressing a press conference at official residence Gono Bhaban in Dhaka this afternoon.

Hasina also called upon all Muslim Ummah across the world to get united against the unilateral announcement for sake of existence of Palestinians.

The prime minister said, “There is a UN resolution and in accordance of the resolution no one can make such announcement and can accept the announcement disregarding it.”

President Donald Trump abruptly reversed decades of US policy yesterday and recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, generating outrage from Palestinians and defying warnings of unrest in the Middle East.

Both Israelis and Palestinians claim Jerusalem as their capital, as the State of Israel maintains its primary governmental institutions there while the State of Palestine ultimately foresees the city as its seat of power; however, neither claim is widely recognised internationally.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh expressed deep concern at the recent announcement by the United States. Bangladesh stresses on preserving the legal status of Jerusalem within the framework of relevant UN resolutions.

Bangladesh reaffirms its position in favour of establishing the State of Palestine on the basis of the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, said a Foreign Ministry statement today.

The country urges all parties concerned to take a pragmatic approach to the Middle East Peace Process in reaching a two state solution for peace and stability in the region.
