An alleged mugger has been detained in connection with the death of a six-month-old baby who fell off his mother’s lap and died during a mugging incident in Dhaka’s Doyaganj area on December 18.

Rajib, the lone prime accused in the case filed over the incident, was held in Doyaganj last night, Anisur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Jatrabari Police Station, told The Daily Star.

Rajib has confessed to his crime, OC Rahman said adding that police will produce him before a court later in the day.

On December 18, the infant, Arafat, sustained serious wounds to his head after the fall. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Aklima, mother of the baby, said she and her husband, with their two sons, -- Arafat and four-year-old Al Amin -- were going to her sister's Sanirakhra residence by a rickshaw during dawn from Sadarghat.

A mugger suddenly tried to snatch the victim's bag. The force of the pull jerked Aklima, the mother, off the rickshaw, along with the baby who was on her lap.

Shah Alam filed the murder case accusing one unidentified person with Jatrabari Police Station.
