HC restrains Uttara Adhunik Medical College’s authority

The High Court today issued an injunction restraining the authorities concerned of Uttara Adhunik Medical College from undertaking any academic and other activities of 57 students who were admitted on “first come first served” basis.

The court also issued a rule asking the respondents to explain in 10 days why the admission of 57 students should not be declared as contravention with the government notice directing the medical college authorities to admit the students on the basis of their merits.

Health secretary, director general of the Directorate of Health Services and principal of Uttara Adhunik Medical College have been made respondents.

The bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice JBM Hassan came up with the order and rule after hearing a writ petition filed by the guardian of a deprived admission seeker challenging the legality of the admission of 57 students on “first come first served” basis.

Writ petitioner’s lawyer Advocate M Asaduzzaman told The Daily Star that the director of health services on August 20 last year issued a notice directing the medical college authorities to admit the students on the basis of merits.

The authorities concerned of Uttara Adhunik Medical College have admitted 57 students in December last year on “first come first served” basis in violation of the government notice and through corruption, he added.

Deputy Attorney General Motaher Hossain Sazu represented the government.
