Ride-apps get nod, need BRTA permit

Popular ride hailing mobile apps like Uber and Pathao have been given approval from Bangladesh’s cabinet division under a framework of fresh guidelines.

These companies have been given 11 conditions to operate, including a compulsory certification from Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA).

Among other guidelines, these companies need to have updated TIN and VAT certificates, specific number of rides across metropolitans, and necessary documents to operate.

The approval came at today’s regular cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, held at the Prime Minister’s Office. Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam later briefed the media.

Ministry sources say, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has prepared a draft of the “Ride-sharing Service Guidelines 2017” and sent it to the Cabinet Division.

During its inception back in 2016, BRTA had termed Uber services illegal, which was coined the same by CNG-autorickshaws largely because it put a large dent on their demand.
