A Dhaka court yesterday sent suspended national cricketer Shahadat Hossain to jail after he surrendered before it seeking bail in a case filed for torturing his 11-year-old domestic help.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Yousuf Hossain passed the order after denying Shahadat's bail petition considering the seriousness of the allegations brought against him in the first information report of the case.

Shahadat surrendered two days after police arrested his wife Jesmine Jahan Nrittya at one of her relatives' house at Malibagh in Dhaka.

During yesterday's hearing, lawyer Kazi Nazibullah Hiru told the court that torturing a domestic help is a heinous act.

But his client was not involved in the incident as he has been staying at different camps most of the time for cricket practice sessions. So he should be granted bail considering his social status, Hiru added.

On the other hand, the prosecution opposed the bail petitions saying that the charges brought against him was primarily proved as the domestic help had earlier given a judicial statement before a magistrate where she narrated a traumatic experience about the inhumane torture carried out on her.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Yunus Khan on Sunday allowed police to interrogate Nrittya Shahadat at jail gate for three days, rejecting both bail and a five-day remand prayer for her.

On September 6, domestic help Mahfuza Akhtar Happy brought the allegations of torture by Shahadat and his wife. Later, a case was filed against the couple with Mirpur Police Station.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) temporarily suspended Shahadat on September 13 following the allegation.
